Niacin (or vitamin B3) assists in the functioning of the skin as well as the digestive and nervous systems. It is also important for the conversion of food to energy. Niacin has the well-known effect of causing “vasodilation”, often called the niacin flush, which is an opening of the small blood vessels (or the capillaries) so that more blood flows through them. These are the blood vessels which have the most value in reaching fatty tissues where toxins are stored, so they can be removed into the bloodstream and processed out of the body. This niacin flush is not harmful or dangerous, but is a sign of improved blood flow. The symptoms include redness of the skin, as well as a feeling of tingling, itching and warmth. While the head and torso are the more common sites, a niacin flush can occur anywhere on the body and can last as long as 10 minutes to several hours, depending on the dose taken. Flushing reactions can subside with continued and regular use.
